"A Cubic Mile of Oil" - infographics

The Cubic Mile of Oil is a unit of energy, created by Hew Crane to aid in public understanding of global-scale energy consumption and resources. He applies the accessible volumetric unit of “a cubic mile of oil” to all energy sources, eliminating a multitude of units such as tons of coal, gallons of oil, and cubic feet of gas, and obviating the need for mind-numbing multipliers such as billions, trillions, and quadrillions. The energy content of a cubic mile of oil is the thermal energy released during its combustion. The thermal energy content of other fuels can be used to express their amounts in equivalent volumes of oil.

Currently the world consumes approximately one cubic mile of oil each year. In the coming decades the world’s annual energy consumption — from all energy sources — will grow from three cubic miles of oil to between six and nine.

If this increasing demand for energy, startling in its rate of growth, is not met, the world will be unable to adequately combat the scourge of poverty, provide food, clothing, and shelter for its residents, or mitigate future effects of climate change.

The concept of the cubic mile of oil is used to create an awareness of the magnitude of the looming demand for additional energy, so daunting that we need effectively utilize all of our resources to surmount it. Fifty years from now the 1 cubic mile of oil a year we obtain from conventional oil will have to be replaced. H. Crane, E. Kinderman and R. Malhotra discuss about different energy sources as a potential resource and also what we would need to do in order to build sufficient capacity to generate one cubic mile of oil annually from each of the various sources for a period of 50 years.

(All the posters are silkscreen printed in a limited edition. The calendars in a number of 250 are all hand stamped. Five alternative energies, solar, nuclear, hydro, wind and coal are representing infographicaly the period of 50 years/energy in which they need to be developed to produce the equivalent of 1 cubic mile of oil)

Abundant energy has become an essential part of modern life, and we cannot go without it if we wish to retain even a small fraction of our current civilization.

Fifty years from now the 1 cubic mile of oil a year we obtain from conventional oil will have to be replaced. What we have left?...alternative energy. Prof. Hew Crane made a report in which he discussed about different energy sources as a potential resource and also what we would need to do in order to build sufficient capacity to generate one cubic mile of oil annually from each of the various sources for a period of 50 years.

By representing this I made calendars infographics for the next 50 years for each alternative energy and they will all be stamped with Icons representative for each energy.

The last days I managed to silkscreen-print my posters, 4 in total, each 100x70 cm. Was a lot of work but the result is great.

So I’m working on my visualisation of the cubic mile of oil. As I did not update it till now what is the cubic mile of oil or cubic kilometer of oil, the CMO\CKO is a unit of energy(thermal energy released during its combustion) was created by Hew Crane of SRI International to aid in public understanding of global-scale energy consumption and resources. So with the help of this unit and the sources from mister Hew Crane I manage to visualise a better the understansing of the amount of oil and other resources we use.

Beside the books and reports research I have a great update, the last weeks I came over a blog from a girl from University of Minnesota- Minneapolis.Molly Eagen is curently Research Assistant at Center for Sustainable Building Research in U.S.

Her thesis paper is called “100 days without oil” (www.100dayswithoutoil.blogspot.com ). She lived 100 days without oil for a better understanting of our society dependence on petroleum. I took contact with her and she was very excited of my project. She agreed that I could use her data she collect during the 100 days. She is planing to publish her book soon, and she could use my visualzation. Would be co cool!!

Frans Masereel Centrum

For 7 days, me and my collegues Susan, Moniek, Mara and Wessel have been working together with 10 students from Brussels, 6 from Antwerp and 5 from Zwolle at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Katerlee/Belgium. The workshop is equipped for the whole range of printmaking techniques: screen printing, intaglio and letterpress printing as well as lithography. We had a great experience working together with the belgium people and alot of fun aside work. Here some pictures :

Hunger for oil. The media is giving us alot of information on this subject. There are many articles, conferences, pros and cons, apocalyptic ideas, etc. I came across some really big numbers,like 84. 24 milion of barrels a day the world's oil production and so on. Those numbers didn't really affect me or made the topic anymore accessable to me nore did flipped a switch in my head. I narrowd down my reearch more to the individual and how our modern society, most of our daily products, our mobility, our food depends on oil. I want to make the information accesable to the people, to give them the opportunity to react, change their behavior and become aware of this.
